IBERDROLA Engineering y Construction has been awarded a contract for approximately 4 million Euros in order to raise the safety of Unit I of the Angra Nuclear Power Plant in Brazil. The Spanish company has turned out to be the winning bidder of this project after having participated in an international selection process called by the Brazilian state-owned Company, ELETRONUCLEAR; in which Areva competed. The plant is located in the State of Río de Janeiro and has a power of 657 megawatts (MW).
The work consists of the implementation of preventive maintenance on the nozzles of the pusher and will be performed together with the Welding Services Inc., which specializes in welding with a highly technical complexity, mitigation of cracks and repair services of other nuclear components. The award of this new contract solidifies the participation of the Company in modernization works at Nuclear Power Plants abroad. Currently, at the Angra Nuclear Power Plan, IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA is performing the project for the Ultasound Inspection of Unit 1.
Among other works, performed by IBERDROLA Engineering in this Latin American country, which should be highlighted, is the project of the substitution of the water generators of unit 1 of this power plant, completed last year. The principal objective of this 79 million dollar contract was to replace the existing generators by new ones, which permit ensuring the operation of the power plant at 100% and permit increasing the thermal efficiency of the cycle in the future and increasing the electric output power of the generator group. The engineering subsidiary of the IBERDROLA Group assumed the technical and construction management of the project, leading the activities of Engineering, planning and supervision of construction.
